Hyundai Engine Recall Claims & California Lemon Law Options

LemonLaws.com Editorial TeamSeptember 18, 2026 9 min de lectura

A Hyundai engine recall may provide an important repair path, but recall work does not always end the problem. Some owners continue experiencing knocking, stalling, loss of power, warning lights, repeat dealership visits, or disputes over engine replacement coverage.

A recall alone does not make a vehicle a lemon. If a serious engine problem continues after warranty or recall repairs, California lemon law may provide additional options depending on the warranty, repair attempts, time out of service, and overall repair history.

This guide explains how to distinguish between a recall, an extended warranty program, a class settlement, and an individual lemon law claim — and what to do when repair attempts haven't solved the problem.

What Is a Hyundai Engine Recall?

A Hyundai engine recall or service campaign applies to specific vehicles identified by factors such as model, model year, engine configuration, and VIN. Hyundai also maintains separate engine warranty-extension programs, so coverage can vary even between similar vehicles.

For example, Hyundai's current TXXM program extends qualifying coverage to 15 years or 150,000 miles for certain engine repairs or replacements involving connecting rod bearing failure. Owners should verify their specific vehicle through Hyundai's official recall VIN lookup and the NHTSA recall lookup tool, because model year alone does not establish recall or campaign eligibility.

Important: A recall, class settlement, and extended warranty program are not the same as a California lemon law claim. Each provides different coverage, different remedies, and different eligibility requirements. If your engine problem continues after any of these programs, individual lemon law rights may still apply.

Do You Qualify for a Hyundai Engine Lemon Law Claim?

You may qualify if:

  • Your Hyundai developed a substantial engine defect under an applicable manufacturer warranty
  • The dealership made multiple repair attempts without providing a lasting solution
  • Engine failure, stalling, knocking, or loss of power continued after repairs
  • Your Hyundai spent significant time out of service for warranty repairs

Common Hyundai Engine Problems We See

Theta II 2.0L Turbo & 2.4L Engines

  • Knocking associated with connecting rod bearing wear
  • Reduced power, hesitation, stalling, or check-engine and oil-pressure warnings
  • Engine inspections or replacements involving applicable Hyundai Recall Campaigns 132 or 162

Client/SME verification required: Confirm Hyundai Campaigns 132 and 162 details before publishing this section.

Nu 2.0L & Gamma 1.6L Engines

  • P1326 warnings, abnormal engine noise, or no-crank/no-start conditions associated with connecting rod bearing wear or damage
  • Engine inspection or replacement under applicable Hyundai bearing-related warranty programs
  • Oil-consumption concerns that should be documented separately because Hyundai treats them separately from its bearing-related T3G/TXXM coverage

Smartstream & Other Newer Hyundai Engines

¿Se pregunta si su situación califica?

  • Older Theta II, Nu, and Gamma bearing programs do not mean every newer Smartstream engine is covered by the same recall or warranty extension
  • If a newer Hyundai develops misfires, power loss, oil-consumption concerns, or warning lights, document each dealership visit and diagnostic result
  • Check the VIN rather than assuming recall coverage based on the engine family or model year alone

Pro Tip: When bringing your Hyundai in for any engine concern, make sure the repair order accurately describes the symptom — "knocking at startup," "oil pressure warning at speed," or "no-crank after warm engine" gives the service department a far clearer record than "engine problem." That documentation can become critical evidence in a lemon law evaluation.

Hyundai Models Included in Certain Engine Warranty Programs

The following Hyundai models have been associated with certain engine recall or warranty extension programs. Eligibility is always VIN-specific — sharing a model year or engine family with another recalled Hyundai does not necessarily mean your vehicle is included. Always verify using your 17-character VIN.

Client/SME verification required: Confirm TXXM program details and model year ranges before publishing.

  • Santa Fe — Certain 2010–2012 models
  • Tucson — Certain 2010–2021 models
  • Sonata Hybrid — Certain 2011–2019 models
  • Veloster — Certain 2012–2017 models
  • Elantra — Certain 2014–2016 models
  • Elantra GT — Certain 2014–2020 models

Check your VIN through Hyundai's official recall lookup and the NHTSA database to confirm current recall and campaign status for your individual vehicle.

What Compensation Can You Get Under California Lemon Law?

Full Vehicle Buyback. For a qualifying claim, Hyundai may be required to repurchase the vehicle, subject to the reimbursement rules and applicable deductions under California law.

Cash Settlement. Some cases resolve through financial compensation that allows you to keep the Hyundai rather than return it to the manufacturer.

Replacement Vehicle. A qualifying consumer may also pursue a comparable replacement vehicle when replacement is an available and appropriate remedy.

The Laws and Programs That Protect California Hyundai Owners

Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act. California's primary consumer warranty law provides potential replacement or restitution when a manufacturer cannot repair a qualifying vehicle to conform to its express warranty after a reasonable opportunity to do so. Learn more in our guide to the Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act, or review the official California Civil Code § 1793.2.

California's Updated Lemon Law Procedures. Hyundai Motor America has opted into the procedures established under SB 26 and AB 1755. For a Hyundai claim governed by these procedures, a consumer seeking civil penalties must provide written notice at least 30 days before filing that action. The notice must include the consumer's name, VIN, a brief repair history and description of the vehicle problems, and a demand for repurchase or replacement. It must be sent through the manufacturer's designated email address or by certified or registered mail, and the consumer must retain possession of the vehicle during the required period. Hyundai then has 30 days after receiving the notice to make a qualifying restitution or replacement offer and up to 60 days to complete it. A consumer may pursue restitution or replacement without this notice, but civil penalties cannot be sought in that action.

California Code of Civil Procedure § 871.24

Hyundai Engine Warranty Extension. Hyundai's TXXM program provides certain qualifying vehicles with extended engine coverage of 15 years or 150,000 miles for specified connecting-rod-bearing-related failures, subject to the program's requirements. Coverage should be confirmed through Hyundai's TXXM VIN eligibility tool.

Client/SME verification required: Confirm TXXM program details before publishing.
